"A Place Called Hidden"
"A Place Called Hidden" is a fantasy world-building project aimed towards young adults loosely based on my experience of growing up in Taiwan. I featured protagonists with magical abilities and mythical animals from the oral stories of my childhood like the Hugupo, a tiger spirit who can shape-shift into an old woman, and the Moxina, mischievous forest spirits who can lead lost humans to danger.
The language in the story is taken from Mandarin, Taigi/Taiwanese Hokkien, and Formosan languages, which may overlap with other Austronesian languages. Other cultures I researched and incorporated include aspects of Filipino culture, Chinese culture, and European folklore about the fair folk. I designed and illustrated visual elements and compiled them into a preliminary novel with the text I've written.
